Dancing mutation CCR5d32
In 2018, He Jiankui used CRISPR-Cas9 to edit the embryos of twin girls, Lulu and Nana. He wanted to replicate the naturally occurring CCR5d32 mutation to confer resistance to HIV. I made another painting about it questioning his motivation. Here I used EK seq and Clay figurines to spell out what was missing: the consideration for the children themselves. The Clay figures spell TGA, the stop codon in the mutation.
